Anyone who watches British comedy at all knows the extremely mixed history of American remakes of wonderful Britcoms. Frankly, it’s a miracle that “The Office” made it (thank a great cast and that apparently NBC couldn’t steamroll Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant in the process of making it) because for it there is “Coupling,” “Spaced,” “Men Behaving Badly,” and “Teachers.”

I was surprised by the american Office.  I didn't think anyone could make anything worse than the british version of it, but the americans succeeded.  As for not getting Gervais, maybe they wanted someone who was funny.

Millions of people like Ricky Gervais, so he MUST be funny, surely... Grin

Jokes aside, I recently saw an American movie, "Ghost Town", with him, the man we love to hate (if we don't think he's funny, that is Wink), as the main protagonist, and it wasn't half bad, actually... perfect role for him, as an annoying, obnoxious, selfish bastard of a dentist, and while the movie is All American in most respect, obvious soppy ending included, it was a rather enjoyable one, on a rainy night Smiley:

Millions of people like abusing children, it doesn't make it a good thing!!

I just don't find him funny.  He can play one role, that is all.  There is no talent in that.  Stephen Merchant wrote most of it, apparently, and did most of the directing according to a member of the crew.

But then maybe I'm not a good authority on it as I seem to be one of the few who thinks Morcambe and Wise are unutterably boring and NOT funny, even though the world seems to think otherwise. lol

Well, it's been quite some time, has anyone seen any of "Episodes"?

Just started watching it, the premise is quite interesting, but after two full episodes I'm still waiting for something, anything, to actually happen...

And I must be one of the few people in the world not to have ever even heard of Matt Leblanc, let alone seen him...

I might be wrong, but he was a guest on Top Gear this week, and judging by his appearance and how much Clarkson fussed over him, I guess he might be one of those actors, you know, that are very good at explosions and car chases... Grin

Have you noticed something stange about Top Gear's Stars In Their Cars? The bigger-name the American actors, the higher their lap-times. I do not believe for a second, for example that Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz both managed to get the best times. Sounds like some bum-licking going on to me.

But that would mean this Leblanc guy is the biggest star of them all, since he's just set the new record on the lap (Rowan Atkinson, previous record holder, must be LIVID Wink).

No, I actually think the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car is just about the less fake thing in the whole show, pity it's also among the stupidest... Cheesy

They just appear in there as an excuse to plug whatever they're launching at the moment, film, TV series, anything, they used to go to talk-shows for that, these days producers must be so desperate they send actors to Top Gear or Jackass or the Dog Whisperer... Cheesy

Anyway, Top Gear is becoming less and less just a "guilty pleasure", as I used to consider it, and more and more of a plain and simple nasty habit I'd better get rid of, much like smoking...

Every week I think they've hit the bottom and that episode is the worst ever, and next week they always manage to surprise me... I'm even beginning to fear they're letting Clarkson write the scripts himself, that's as bad as it feels... Grin

He's not a biggot. Just don't like him as a presenter. He's welcome to his opinions though. Freedom of speech and all that.

Jeremy Clarkson doesn't have ANY opinion, all he's got is prejudices, which makes him the walking definition of a bigot according to the dictionary...

"The predominant usage in modern English refers to persons hostile to those of differing sex, race, ethnicity, religious belief or spirituality, nationality, language, sexual orientation, and age"

The only reason there isn't a picture of Clarkson at the end of the text is that my dictionary's not illustrated... Cheesy

But maybe this is just a misunderstanding due to a little spelling mistake... Phil thought Karl meant to say Clarkson is a big goat, which he clearly isn't, he's a big ape! Grin

Really, lads... I can't believe we're arguing about the specifics of why we don't like that sorry excuse for a human being... Smiley

Which leaves the question open, why would anyone want to watch Top Gear, then?

Well, think about this... what would remain of "Til Death Us Do Part", if we took Alf Garnett out?
Clarkson fills the same role in Top Gear and, unfortunately, same as it happened with "Til Death" (re. Warren Mitchell interviews), far too many people take him seriously...

The comparison is not too far-fetched, as an incurable optimist I like to believe that "Jeremy Clarkson" is largely scripted, and that he can't be THAT bad in real life... but I'm gullible, and probably just making excuses for myself because I keep watching Top Gear... Wink
